European solar installations are heading for a new record in electricity generation
- EU output already over 100 billion kilowatt hours in October
- Germany tops EU country rankings
- Nine billion kilowatt hours growth forecast compared to 2017
The 100 billion kilowatt hour mark was already cracked on 12 October. This means that these results were achieved almost one and a half months earlier than in the previous year (21.11.2017). Never before had the cumulative total output of solar installations reached 100 billion kilowatt hours so early, the International Economic Forum for Renewable Energies (IWR) in Münster announced. The results are based on the IWR analysis of data from European transmission grid operators.
The current leader in the EU country ranking for solar power generation is Germany with a total output of 38.1 billion kWh. With 15.6 billion kWh, Italy is in second place, followed by Spain (10.7 billion kWh) and Great Britain (10.2 billion kWh). France is in fifth place with 8.6 billion kWh of solar power, followed somewhat behind by Belgium and Greece in sixth and seventh place with 3.2 and 2.9 billion kWh respectively.
According to projections by the IWR, electricity generation from solar plants in the EU member states is expected to increase to more than 113 billion kilowatt hours by the end of 2018. Compared to 2017, experts expect an increase of more than nine billion kWh.
